Mike Harlan's Big Surgery on January 27th!

Lisa here (Mike and Diane's youngest daughter)!

Please check this blog for updates from our family the day of surgery and afterward. You'll see a "Subscribe to" link at the bottom of this page if you'd like to be notified when we make updates. We know that Mom will be preoccupied and may not have time to reach out to everyone she would like to. We'll use this blog to let you know status and when he's ready for visitors. Please make comments in the blog which we will be delighted to share with Dad during his recovery.  Mom and Dad are thankful for prayers.

Heather and Amy (Mike and Diane's oldest and middle daughters) will arrive a few days before the surgery so we can have some family time before Dad starts on this exciting journey!

The big surgery to permanently untwist Dad's back will be at Sibley Hospital in Washington, DC on Wednesday January 27th.  He'll go in early in the morning and the goal is to be out of surgery in under 12 hours! Mom, Dad and I have tremendous confidence in his surgeon, Dr. Michael Goldsmith.  Heather and Amy will both return home to Texas by January 31st AND I will be on my annual Ladies-Who-Vacation trip to the Caribbean by then, so ... we anticipate Mom will need some support (emotional and otherwise :-) in my absence from Monday February 1st through Saturday February 6th. Please feel free to reach out to her during that time!

We will make updates as we know more specifics about what to expect following surgery.
The entire Harlan family truly appreciates your concern and loving thoughts.  We are all so excited for Dad's new lease on life to begin this year!  He is so amazing with a crooked back (fisherman, bowler, golfer, handyman, vestry member, West Point alumnus, friend, Dad, Grandaddy, etc.) - he'll be a total Rock Star when he's standing tall again!

Many thanks,
Lisa Harlan

  2. Hi Lisa,
You did a great job putting this blog together. I enjoyed reading it. your parents are the absolute best. I look forward to hearing all about your Dad's progress if I can figure how to get it. I was a neighbor of your parents but we moved to FL in July. I loved to hear your Mom's stories about Olivia's comments. I referred to them as "oLIVIAISMS." I put your Dad.s name on my friend's prayer list which is quite powerful. I know your Dad will do great as he has so much confidence in his surgeon which is so important and your Mom is also very positive. I'm sure Missy O will have lots to say also. Well Lisa enjoy your vacation; I know your Dad and Mom will be part of it. Barbara Aarons
